The theme for this year’s World Rangers Day is Rangers are no strangers to diversity.
World Ranger Day honors rangers who protect the world’s natural and cultural resources. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, World Ranger Day is also celebrated in memory of rangers killed or injured in the line of duty. The United Nations has declared the rangers as the so-called heroes of wildlife conservation.
World Ranger Day: History
A filmmaker and conservationist, Sean Wilmore worked as a park ranger. He was concerned about the lack of respect for park rangers and the lack of understanding among people about the dangers they face. So, in the year 2004, he decided to make a documentary with the aim of bringing to light the plight faced by park rangers. In order to compile stories of the duties and sacrifices faced by forest rangers into a documentary, he decided to spend nearly a year interviewing them around the world.
The Thin Green Line was the title of the documentary, which had its world premiere in 2007 and was an instant hit with audiences in over 50 countries.
Following his success, Sean Wilmore started the Thin Green Line Foundation to support park rangers. In the year 1992, the International Rangers Federation and Sean Wilmore collaborated and founded the first World Ranger Day.
World Ranger Day: Significance
All over the world, park or forest rangers risk their lives to protect forests and other natural resources. Many forest rangers lose their lives in the course of duty due to wildlife accidents or being killed by criminals. Acknowledgment of their commitment and sacrifice in protecting the environment is thus commendable and needs to be respected.

The theme for this year’s World Rangers Day is Rangers are no strangers to diversity. The International Ranger Federation and its partners have chosen diversity as the theme for World Ranger Day 2022 because they believe that diversity among rangers should be embraced in the same way that we appreciate diversity in our natural world. do
