What is an ITR file? These memes will help you breathe a sigh of relief and they are tax free.

Sunday, July 31, was the last day to file your ITR or Income Tax Return. As the date approached, the requests and demands for extension were increasing. Taxpayers were trending hashtags, including #Extend_Due_date_Immediately and it has garnered over 5,000 posts so far. However, the government hasn’t issued any notification indicating the extension for ITR filing, so we’re hoping you’re on that side of the fence.

Notably, this is the first time in three years that the ITR filing deadline has not been extended. While some were a little worried about it, many people took to Twitter and shared memes on the same.

Many issues like internet woes, not logging in and searching the entire house for your PAN card were discussed through memes.

Meanwhile, a total of 4,09,49,663 were filed till July 28, according to the Income Tax website. Of these, 2,41,15,777 verified ITRs have been processed. However, according to data from the Income Tax Portal, only 40 per cent taxpayers have filed their ITR as the portal shows that there are a total of 10,45,31,679 people registered.

Taxpayers raised issues regarding errors faced while filing income tax returns as they alleged that the portal was not working. They trended the hashtag all over Twitter and tagged the accounts of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Central Board of Direct Taxes and Income Tax Department to demand the extension.

Experts were of the opinion that the due date for filing ITR cannot be extended beyond July 31 as many taxpayers are able to file their returns.
