Indian judoka Sushila Devi Akambam ensured India a medal at the Commonwealth Games judo competition with an epon in the last few seconds of her semi-final clash with Priscilla Morand of Mauritius in the women’s 48kg division.

Indians are also in contention for three bronze medals in judo as Vijay Kumar Yadav in men’s 60kg, Jaslin Singh Saini in men’s 66kg and Suchika Triyal in women’s 57kg reached the bronze medal play-offs. India has won three silver and five bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games as judo has been on and off the program since 1990. It was contested in the 2014 edition in Glasgow but was dropped for the 2018 edition in Gold Coast.

Sushila Devi, who competed at the Tokyo Olympics last year, now has a chance to win her first gold medal for the country when she takes on South Africa’s Michaela Whiteball in the final on Monday evening. Sushila, who won silver in the women’s 48kg category at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, was in superb form as she conceded a minor penalty to the Mauritian girl in the first 30 seconds of the match. .

Sushila also received a pair of shadows in the three-minute bout before she made a brilliant attack and threw her opponent onto her back to win the eppon with just seconds remaining, the highest score in the judo match. Sealed the win. Earlier in the morning, Sushila defeated Malawi’s Harriet Boniface by epon to advance to the semi-finals.

In the men’s 60 kg, Vijay Kumar started well and won his first round match before losing to Australia’s Joshua Katz in the quarterfinals. He went on to the repechage round and defeated Scotland’s Dylan Munro by waza eri to set up a bronze medal match against Cyprus’ Petros Christodoulides later in the evening.

In the men’s 66kg division, Jaslin Singh Saini was defeated by Scotland’s Finley Allen in the semi-finals of Epon and will now compete against Australia’s Nathan Katz for the bronze medal.

In the women’s 57kg category, Suchika Trial suffered an 11-0 defeat by Canada’s Christa Deguchi in the quarter-finals of Eppon before advancing to the repechage stage by defeating South Africa’s Donnie Breitenbach at the hands of Eppon. The bronze medal went to Christine Legender. Mauritius in the bronze medal match.
