Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Saturday was embroiled in a controversy over Bihar’s weekly holiday of Urdu medium schools on Friday. Singh, who represents the Begusarai Lok Sabha seat, termed the provision as an attempt to “impose Sharia”.

“From childhood, we know that schools and offices are closed on Sundays. Holidays in some institutions on Fridays seems to me an attempt to impose Sharia code for the benefit of a community,” said the firebrand BJP leader who Outrage against the “politics of happiness” is in the news.

He was responding to reporters’ questions about the provision, which has been around for years but has now become a bone of contention between the BJP and other parties, particularly Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U). Which is his biggest ally party. Interestingly, though, BJP ministers in the state cabinet, including Deputy CM Turkeshwar Prasad, who is the leader of the party in the Assembly, are trying to defuse the controversy.
