‘Operation Lotus’ exposed, says Jairam Ramesh after 3 Congress MLAs from JK were caught with cash in Bengal

The Congress on Saturday alleged that the BJP’s “Operation Lotus” in Jharkhand was exposed after police intercepted a car carrying three grand old party MLAs with large sums of money to Howrah in West Bengal. Acting on a tip-off, the SUV in which Congress MLAs Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kuchap and Naman Buxal were traveling was intercepted on National Highway 16 at Ranihatti in Panchla police station area.

“We had specific information that huge amount of money was being transported in a black car. We started checking the vehicles and intercepted the SUV in which three MLAs from Jharkhand were traveling. The vehicle had a large amount of money in it. Cash was found in me,” said Howrah Superintendent of Police (Rural) Swati Bhangalia.

“Cash counting machines are being brought in to trace the total amount. The MLA is also being questioned about the source of the money and where it was being taken,” he added.

Apart from the MLA, there were two other people in the SUV, who were carrying a board mentioning “MLA Jamtara Jharkhand” along with the election symbol of the Congress, police said. Ansari is the MLA from Jamtara, while Kachap is the MLA from Khajri in Ranchi district and Kongari is the MLA from Kolibera in Samdiga district.

The Jharkhand Congress claimed that the large sum of cash was part of a BJP plot to topple the Hemant Soren government, which it is a part of along with Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal.
