Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari told the Rajya Sabha that 26 green express highways connecting major cities will be constructed before 2024. Gadkari also pledged that India’s road infrastructure would be similar to that of the US.
Gadkari, during the question interval, was responding to a question about NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) fund availability, raised by Congress MP Rajeev Shukla. Brushing off allegations of lack of funding, Gadkari mentioned that NHAI can construct 5 lakh km of roads in a year, as reported by PTI. He said that there is no shortage of funds. I promise that before 2024 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s road infrastructure will be the same as that of America.
Gadkari claimed that after the construction of the Green Express Highway, travel time from Delhi to Chandigarh will be reduced to two and a half hours, Delhi to Amritsar in four hours and Delhi to Mumbai in twelve hours. “We are determined to change the face of road infrastructure in the country,” he added.
Earlier, Gadkari, while addressing the Lok Sabha in March this year, quoted John F. Kennedy, who said, “American roads are not good because America is rich but America is rich because American roads are good,” and Assured that Indian road infrastructure will be as good as US.

Earlier this week, Gadkari called himself the “father of toll tax” in India because he built the first such road in Maharashtra when he was a state minister in the late 90s. The Union Minister also mentioned two new toll collection technologies that the government is considering. The first is based on GPS technology while the second is based around the number plate of the vehicle.
