After his second consecutive Commonwealth gold medal, the 27-year-old took to his official social media account and thanked the people of India for believing in him.

“Lifting 201 kg has never felt easy but thanks to the love and wishes of billions of people back home, every challenge is just an attempt away,” he tweeted.

Four years ago, Mirabai won the gold medal in Gold Coast while Ranaivuswa finished second. The same arrangement was maintained in Birmingham.

Mirabai waited in the clean and jerk until all the other lifters had completed their attempts, the best being 97 kg by Canadian Kaminsky. The former easily lifted 109 kg in his first attempt and the gold was already in his kitty. He lifted 113 kg to set a Games record and lifted 115 kg but fell short.

“I am happy with my performance here. It is always good to win a gold medal with a record. I had hoped to win a gold medal and managed to do so,” Meerabai said after the medal ceremony.

CWG 2022, Day 2 wraps up: Mirabai Chanu wins gold with 4 weightlifters medals; Lulina Borgohen is making progress.

“After the Tokyo Olympic Games I worked on improving my performance in Snatch and I am happy to manage to do well here. I will continue to do well in the next few months as I aim to be in December this year. To perform well in the Volley World Championship.

Mirabai’s gold medal was India’s third in weightlifting after Sanket Sargar (55kg) and Gururaja Pujari (61kg) won silver and bronze respectively on the first day.
