A JD(U) MLA moved the resolution expressing concern over the alleged infiltration of outsiders into Manipur.

The Manipur Assembly has unanimously passed two private members’ resolutions to set up the State Population Commission and implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

JD(U) legislator KH Joy Kishan moved the resolutions on the last day of the budget session of the state assembly on Friday. He claimed that the population in the hilly areas of the state increased by 153.3% between 1971 and 2001 and it increased to 250.9% during the period 2001-2011. Valley areas recorded a population growth of 94.8 percent from 1971 to 2001 and nearly 125 percent from 2001 to 2011, Joy Kishan said.

The JD(U) MLA expressed his concern over the alleged infiltration of outsiders into Manipur. He claimed that the people of the valley districts were restricted from settling in the hills and the increase in population in the hills in particular could be attributed to the alleged influx of people from outside. Manipur shares an international border with Myanmar.

Chief Minister N Baran Singh participated in the debate on the resolutions and said that such motions to set up the Population Commission and implement the NRC in the state would serve the collective interests of all the members of the House. Meanwhile, several civic bodies demanded an updated NRC with a fixed cut-off of twenty years to identify illegal immigrants in the northeastern state.
