John Cena posts after weightlifter Sankit Sargar wins silver at Birmingham 2022

India’s Sanket Sargar on Saturday won a silver medal in the men’s 55kg weightlifting category at the Commonwealth Games 2022. There were many words of praise for the Maharashtra-born athlete’s brilliant show. The surprising message was from WWE superstar and actor John Cena. Seena posted a picture of Sankeet on Instagram.

This is not the first time that Sena has shown interest in an Indian sports personality. Earlier, Sena had posted pictures of cricketers MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli on Instagram.

Returning to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Sanket, with a total of 248kg, finished second as Malaysian weightlifter Aneeq Muhammad won the gold medal. Aneeq lifted a total of 249 kg to win the gold medal. Sri Lankan weightlifter Dilanka Yudage won the bronze medal in the event and took the third position.

Sankit Sargar made a promising start to the Snitch event after successfully lifting 113 kg. In his first attempt at the clean and jerk event, Sanket lifted 135 kg. Sanket failed to lift 139 kg in his next two attempts, but that did not stop him from securing the silver medal. He also suffered an elbow injury in the clean and jerk event and this may hurt his gold medal chances.

Sanket became the national champion in Khelo India Youth Games and Khelo India University Games in 2020. He was one of India’s favorites to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Sanket is currently the defending national level champion in the 55 kg category. Earlier this year, he put on a stellar show at the Singapore Weightlifting International Tournament to earn a place at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He set a new national and Commonwealth record in Singapore and won a gold medal. In total, he lifted 256 kg. In the snitch category, Sanket lifted 113 kg, and later in the clean and jerk segment, he lifted 146 kg, improving his show.

India has so far managed to win three gold medals at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. At the end of the third day, the Indian contingent found itself sixth in the medal tally. India bagged three golds along with two silvers and one bronze.
