JNU students staged a protest demanding immediate allotment of hostels.

Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University on Monday demonstrated outside the Dean of Students (DoS) office and demanded immediate allotment of the hostel and its renovation. The protest was organized by a student group called the Democratic Students Federation (DSF).

He also demanded that the hostel elections, which have not been held for the last two years, should be held soon. The students held placards that read, ‘DoS answer (DoS, answer)’ ‘Ensure hostels for all’, ‘Stop interfering with reservation policies in hostel allotment’, ‘We have immediate hostel allotment’. organized a protest outside the DOS office to demand Physical classes are starting from August 3 but so far many students have not been allotted hostels. It’s a complete mess. Moreover, reservation policies have not been followed properly in hostel allotments so far,” said DSF president Swati Singh.

He said that the condition of the hostels is very bad because there are frequent incidents of wall or roof collapse. Last week, students of the university alleged that part of the balcony and roof collapsed in two separate hostels after recent rains.

“We have demanded that the hostel be renovated as soon as possible. We also wanted the hostel elections to be held as soon as possible as there have been no elections for two years,” said Singh. They have also alleged violation of reservation policies during the hostel allotment process as the administration is not allotting hostels to students belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities on priority basis. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) has alleged that the Dean of Students (DOS) has lost the data of many students due to which the students were given P1 after the list of P2 categories was exhausted. Hostel is not allotted.

“Hostels are not being allotted to SC/ST students on preferential basis and there are also discrepancies in OBC reservations,” it said. The union also accused the DoE of acting in a biased manner, alleging a “nexus between ABVP and DoS”. Hostels have been allotted to selected students coming through this channel. He added that we have raised several complaints in this matter.
