India beat Singapore 3-0 to win the gold medal in the men’s team event final (PTI Image)
India produced a dominant display at the summit to beat Singapore 3-1 in Birmingham.
India’s men’s table tennis team comprising Sharath Kamal Achanta, Sathyan Ganasekaran and Harmeet Desai defeated Singapore 3-1 in Birmingham on Wednesday to win India’s second consecutive gold medal in the event. On the final day of the team events, India, who had beaten Nigeria in the semi-finals a day earlier, stamped their authority with two top-50 ranked players in their line-up.
As expected, Gansekaran won both of their matches, 3-1 against Yeo-N Kuen Peng in singles and 3-0 against Kuen Peng and Yung-Isaac Kwek in doubles with Desai. Although Sarath lost his tie to Zhe Yu Clarence Chew 1-3. Desai sealed the deal for India though with a 3-0 win over Clarence Chew.

India dominated the group stage with big wins over Barbados, Singapore, Northern Ireland before beating Bangladesh in the quarter-finals and then Nigeria in the semi-finals to reach the summit clash. The success of the men’s team overshadowed a major disappointment that came with the Indian women’s team, Gold Coast 2018 defending champions, knocked out in the quarter-finals by the eventual gold medal winners – Malaysia.
