It was the first time Punia would return home without a medal, having won silver in the 2006, 2014 and 2018 editions, as well as bronze in the 2010 Delhi Games. He has a season’s best of 57.09m and a personal best of 64.84m which he set back in 2004.
Dhillon, who has a season’s best of 58.03m, could only manage 53.51m in his sixth and final attempt to end his campaign in disappointment. He won a bronze medal in the last edition in Gold Coast in 2018. Nigeria’s Chioma Onyekore won the gold with a best throw of 61.70m while England’s Jade Lilly (58.42m) won the silver.
