Germany’s captain Alexandra Popp was out of the final due to injury.

Germany suffered a major blow moments before Sunday’s Euro 2022 final against England as captain and top goalscorer Alexandra Popp was ruled out with an injury in the warm-up.

The Wolfsburg striker scored six goals in five games en route to the final to equal the all-time record for goals in a single women’s European Championship.

“Alex Pope suffered muscle problems in the warm-up,” the German Football Federation tweeted. “Leah Schuler replaces him in starting XI.”

Pope was initially included in Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s starting line-up for the final at Wembley.

However, after missing Euro 2013 and 2017, the 31-year-old’s injury curse returned with the European Championship.
