Republican Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker, who previously criticized the absent fathers, admitted Wednesday that he has a 10-year-old son whom he never mentioned in public and from whom he stands apart. ۔
Walker’s campaign later confirmed the child’s existence. The Daily Beast reported. Late Tuesday, the boy’s mother took the former NFL star to court in 2014 to pay child support.
“Herschel had a child years ago when she was not married. She has supported the child and continues to do so,” said Scott Paradise, Walker campaign manager, in a statement.
“She is proud of her children. To suggest that Herschel is ‘hiding’ the child because he has not used her in his political campaign is offensive and ridiculous.
The Daily Beast reported, citing a close family member, that Walker had not played an active role in raising his second son, but was sending him Christmas and birthday presents.
The boy, whose last name is Walker, has never met or talked to 22-year-old Christian, the second son of a former Heisman Trophy winner.
According to court documents quoted by the Daily Beast, the boy’s mother had to take Walker to court a year after the birth in order to establish his birth as well as secure help.
By the time the court issued its final ruling in the case in August 2014, Walker’s son was already 2 years old.
The boy’s mother had a three-year relationship with Walker, which ended in September 2011 – about nine months before their son was born. It was not clear why the relationship ended.
Walker, endorsed by former President Donald Trump and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Has repeatedly lamented the loss of fatherless families.
He often cites his relationship with Christian, whose mother is Walker’s ex-wife, Cindy Grossman. Walker has previously said that he worked with his former and current partner to raise Christians.
“I want all African Americans to know, although you can leave the mother, don’t leave the child,” Walker told WABE-TV’s “Love and Respect for the Killer Mike” recently on May 27.
“Be a father, be a strong person in this child’s life, because that’s what happens, that’s what happens. I said, ‘I’ll keep raising him, and stay with him there.’
Walker, who is running against Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock in November, is upset by claims that he lied about his past as well as his history of domestic violence during his campaign.
In 2005, Walker’s ex-wife issued a protection order against him after accusing him of threatening and controlling his behavior.
Acknowledging the paternity of his youngest son, Walker’s campaign accused his opponent, Warnock, of “a dirty mud-slinging campaign” and of a “nasty detention dispute with his ex-wife.” Mentioned
“It’s a complete double standard,” Paradise said.
Warnock’s ex-wife, whom he divorced in 2020, went to court earlier this year to argue that he was not paying his share of child support for his two children.
Warnock’s campaign later retaliated, saying the senator was a “devoted father.”
