It is a well-known fact that Telugu states have a craze for movies that is unparalleled. Tollywood stars enjoy a rabid fan following and people are known to flock to theaters in large numbers, often queuing up for hours and even the previous night. The release of a new movie by a big star in the Telugu states is no less than a festival. While films starring top stars still enjoy wild fan treatment, things have not been the same since the outbreak of Covid-19 and the emergence of OTT platforms. Now the number of people in theaters is very less.
According to some reports, many theaters in the states have already closed. Some theaters are running at a loss. One of these ill-fated theaters is the Ranga Theater at Velgudu in Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh.
The cinema hall has been screening Naga Chaitanya’s Thank You since its release on June 22 last week. The film did not receive good reviews although Naga Chaitanya’s performance was praised by some critics.
For the past few days, very few people have been stepping into Ranga Theater for the Thank You show. The theater then went buy-one, get-one-free for every ticket. But that too failed to entice the audience to watch the film. Even after the offer was announced, according to the theater management, there were only 6 people in the audience for the show.
Thank You is directed by Vikram Kumar. Apart from Naga Chaitanya, it also stars Rashi Khanna, Malvika Nair, Avika Gaur and Prakash Raj. The performances have been praised but reviews have been mixed with criticism of the lagging screenplay.
