Four Congress members – Manickam Tagore, Ramya Haridas, TN Parthapan and S Jothimani were suspended from LS for the rest of the monsoon session last Monday for carrying placards and raising slogans inside the House.

The monsoon session of Parliament has seen little action since it began on July 18 as the House remained deadlocked over protests by the opposition, which insisted on debating price hikes and other issues.

Congress and DMK members walked out of the Lok Sabha on Monday, expressing displeasure over Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s response to the debate on inflation. Amid Sitharaman’s reply, Congress members walked out of the House. After a few minutes, DM members also walked out in protest.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament House later, Congress MP Manish Tiwari, who opened the debate, said that according to the government, “There is no inflation as if no one killed Jessica. Everything is in turmoil.” , this is your (government) response to the concerns raised by the opposition. He also said that the minister’s response was arrogant.

Raising the issue of high LPG price during the debate on price hike in the Lok Sabha, TMC member Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar on Monday took a bite of the raw brinjal he had brought with him and said he wondered if the Govt. “We want to eat raw” vegetables.

As opposition members questioned the government’s seriousness in addressing the inflation issue, Dastidar said that those who have received cylinders under the Ujola scheme do not have money for refills.

Members in the Lok Sabha took part in a debate on the price hike while the Rajya Sabha will take up the issue on Tuesday.
