Authorities say a 9-year-old girl was “hanged” in Houston, Texas, and her mother was injured when the woman’s ex-boyfriend opened fire because he was angry at their separation.
The mother was watching a movie with her children in her apartment when her ex-boyfriend, 22-year-old Jeremiah Jones, appeared unannounced on Monday night. The PRC of the news station reported.
The news station KHOU reported that the couple, who had been dating for eight months before the breakup two months ago, got into a fight.
Police said Jones accused the woman of talking to other men since they broke up, and asked her to hand over her phone while they were arguing in the room.
During the commotion, the children were separated from their mother, and the 9-year-old was left in a bedroom.
Houston Police Lt. JP Horrelika said Jones went back to the bedroom and deliberately “hanged” the girl, possibly as “revenge” for the breakup.
“He was worried about it because that relationship was over,” Horilica said.
After shooting the daughter, the accused returned to the mother and shot her in the shoulder, police said.
The injured were taken to a local hospital, where a 9-year-old girl was pronounced dead. The mother was hoping for a recovery. No one has been identified.
The woman’s two other children, aged 1 and 3, were at home during the shooting but were unharmed.
By the time police arrived, Jones had entered a dark Chevrolet Camaro and fled, officials said. Police are searching for him on charges of murder and assault.
Police said Jones was out on bond for violating a security order at the time of the shooting. The 22-year-old’s criminal record spans a decade, including charges of theft and reckless driving.
