At the Yankee Stadium on Thursday night, the New York Yankees and Houston Astros will rekindle their feud with the first of four games in the Bronx. The Yankees have the best baseball record (too much) and the Astros have the second best American League record (too much). They have been the best two teams in the junior circuit so far in 2022.
“I think it’s always fun to compete against the best.” Astros’ third baseman Alex Bragman told MLB.com on Wednesday. “I think everyone is looking forward to playing against the best and competing against the best. Of course everyone will be really excited.”
The standings of the American League as of Thursday morning are:
- New York Yankees: 51-18
- Houston Astros: 43-24 (7 GB)
- Toronto Blue Jays: 39-30 (11.5 GB)
- Cleveland Guardians: 36-28 (11.5 GB)
- Boston Red Sox: 39-31 (12 GB)
Only the New York Mets (45-26) have a better record in National League teams than the Astros – the Astros swept the Mets in Houston in just two games – so the series includes two of the top three baseball teams. The Yankees and Astros are no strangers, although Houston has a New York number in the recent post-season. The environment in the Bronx statistics is tense.
“I don’t get caught up in it.” Yankees manager Aaron Bone said New York Post on Wednesday. “This is a team we have a feud with. You appreciate joining a series like this. I don’t think I will add to that. It’s not October. It’s important against a great opponent. There are games and I hope we play. Good

We were so close to Cole vs. Cole. Worldland matchup. The two former comrades stood in line to face each other at one point, however The recent era of Cervino in the COVID list The Yankees were forced to change their rotation, so Cole and Verlander no longer lined up to pitch the same day. Very bad. It would have been one of the best on-paper pitching matches of the season.
Here are four things to keep in mind this weekend’s series, which are predicted for good measurement.
These teams have a history.
A lot of it The Astros defeated the Yankees in the 2015 Wild Card Game, the 2017 ALCS, and the 2019 ALCS. The Yankees have been dominating the regular season (12-8 against the Astros since 2018), but no one really cares. Only October matters, and the post-season feud has been one-sided.
Along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees have been the most vocal team against Houston’s sign-stealing scandal, with GM Brian Cashman saying it “The only thing that stopped“The Yankees have to stop winning the 2017 World Series. It’s a long way off, but the thing is: the Yankees are not happy about this scandal and are not ashamed to tell everyone.
Nor, of course, are Yankees fans. When Astros played at Yankee Stadium last year – this was his first visit to the Bronx since 2019 – before the sign-stealing scandal surfaced – he was shouted at. Braggman, Jose Altio, and Carlos Correa heard the loudest voices (George Springer hears the rest of the kisses when he goes with the Blue Jays).
Of course, The Yankees themselves have used video replay equipment to steal signs since 2015-16., Although not in real time, and this was before the MLB issued a memo informing the teams that there would be severe penalties for plagiarism. The Yankees are not innocent at all. After all, there is no love between the two franchises. This will be an important series.
Both teams are excellent at stopping runs.
Expect a high scoring series? You may be disappointed. The Astros and Yankees are two of the best run-scoring teams in baseball this season. Despite their reputation as offensive powerhouses, they are pitching first teams. This is where the Astros and Yankees rank different run-of-the-mill measures as they move towards Wednesday’s action:
Runs per game are allowed. |
3.43 (third in MLB) |
3.00 (first in MLB) |

3.03 (third) |

Pitching hair |
8.7 (sixth) |
11.4 (First) |

42 (second) |
You can also dig deeper to see things like the chase rate (Yankees I, Astros VII), the swing strike rate (Yankees I, Astros VIII) and the opposite barrel rate (Yankees I, Astros V). Whatever you can do to stop the runs, these two teams are good at it. Astros and Yankees suppress their opponents overnight.
The biggest difference between the two teams is crime. The Yankees did not. The seventh fastest team in the history of baseball to win 50 Just pitch well. He also leads the MLB in scores per game (5.12) and OPS + (121), and the ranking near the top of the league is a very aggressive statistic. The Yankees have an excellent baseball record because they do everything well.
The Astros, meanwhile, are averaging just 4.31 runs per game, ranking 17th in baseball and below the MLB average of 4.33. Houston has an offensive line cut as the Astros hit the third-highest homer (90) and the fourth-best team is OPS + (111), yet they are 17th in runs per game. Getting things done is not always easy.
Given the names on the roster, I wouldn’t dismiss the Astros as some league average offensive team. If he is not careful, he will soon ruin the day of a pitcher. Both the Yankees and the Astros run prevention juggernauts. They work for you every run. Does that mean we’re heading for a low-scoring series? Sure, it’s possible, but the baseball gods like to play tricks on us.
Who’s hot, who’s not?
The season of 162 games is long and unforgivable, and every player goes through ups and downs. That way, some players will go on a hot streak this weekend. Here are three Yankees players who have been crushing the ball for the past two weeks:
The Hooks’ numbers have been quite good over the last two weeks, although they have had a number of major successes in recent years, including a go-ahead base-clearing double week and a moving ninth innings triple Monday. He and Joey Gallo were awesome only in April and May, but both picked it up in June and are among their best parts of the season.
Significantly absent: Judge Aaron. The MLB home run leader has 6 for 33 (.182) in his last nine games. Although he crushed two home runs on Wednesday.. Josh Donaldson and Gian Carlo Stanton have not been promoted since they were dropped from the injury list earlier this month. Donaldson’s return is 13 for 59 (.220). Stanton is 6 for 49 (.122).
Here are three Astros players who have been hot for the past two weeks:
Alvarez is an absolute monster and I will discuss the best hitter of the game. On Wednesday, he led baseball in OPS (1,037) and OPS + (195), and is doing so comfortably with average strikeouts (15.5%) and swinging strikes (8.2%). Alvarez, Owner of a brand new $ 115 million extensionHitting three homers in two games against the Mets earlier this week.
Almost every Houston regular has had above-average OPS in the last two weeks. The only trouble spots are shortstops, where Aledmys Díaz and Mauricio Dubón are recruiting for injured Jeremy Pina, and Centerfield, where Chas McCormick and Jose Siri have dominated most of the season. Overall, the Astros are heading for New York, swinging the bat well.
They will meet again next week.
Following the four-game series in New York, the Astros and Yankees will compete in Houston next week, but only for one game. The two clubs were originally scheduled to play a three-game series at Mint Mad Park from April 4 to 6. This is one of the series that was erased by the owners’ lockout, and like all these games, the makeup dates are scattered throughout the season.
To make up for all three Houston games, the Astros and Yankees will play a game next Thursday, June 30, then a double header on Thursday, July 21. This was to be the last day of the four-day Al. – Star interval. Instead, both teams lost one day from their All-Star break and will now have to play double headers instead. Rough, but not the only team doing it.
prediction!
The four-game series allows me to take the easy way out and say that these two very good teams will separate the four games, but no, I would say a little bolder. The Yankees won three of four.. New York has been so good with anger that 12 of their 18 losses were not more than two runs. They are rarely out of the game. The Astros are the best but the Yankees are the best, and I have the home team taking the series this weekend.
