As flood waters recede, Assam is now battling Japanese encephalitis. 52 have died so far.

Fears of Japanese encephalitis are on the rise in Assam as floodwaters recede following unusual rains. In general, the risk of mosquito and water-borne diseases is high when flood-affected people travel home from relief centers.

According to the National Health Mission in Assam, 52 people have died since the outbreak of the disease. On August 2, four people died in Nagaon district, one of the worst-hit districts in Assam. While a total of 305 people were detected with the mosquito-borne disease in a month, three of them were infected on August 2. Nagaon district has recorded 44 cases – the highest so far – followed by Jorhat with 39 and Golaghat with 34. .

Apart from Japanese encephalitis, acute encephalitis syndrome has killed 16 people this year and 143 cases have been reported so far, according to state health officials. The state health department has taken steps to create awareness and taken various precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, Japanese encephalitis tests have been made free in all district hospitals and government medical colleges. Besides, the state government has put all the nine medical colleges and 10 district hospitals on alert, ready ICU and laboratory test facilities. Medicines for acute encephalitis syndrome and Japanese encephalitis are available at all designated hospitals.

According to the National Health Mission, fogging with malathion is being done regularly and 6.8 lakh insecticide-treated mosquito nets have been distributed in the affected areas.
