An Arkansas Correctional Officer was shot dead by a suspect in a county jail case, state police said Thursday.
A statement from Arkansas State Police, which is leading the investigation into the incident at Perryville’s Perry County Jail, said the suspect was a 37-year-old man arrested by deputies and remanded in custody Wednesday night. The case was being registered. He somehow managed to get to the gun and fired.
The gunman is now apparently being held in connection with the murder.
“Currently, the name of the correctional officer is being withheld during notification of the next of kin’s actions,” the ASP said in a statement.
The name of the accused has not been released yet.
Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin He spoke on social media on Thursday about the killing of a guard.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family and everyone in the Perry County Sheriff’s Office,” he wrote.
