A 6-year-old boy drowned while trying to escape from a locked gate

A 6-year-old North Carolina girl drowned in a pool above her neighbor as she stepped out of her home and hit a locked gate, her grieving mother said Tuesday.

The young Zamia judge and her 5-year-old brother, Za-Moni, walked out of the family’s Gastonia home while their mother thought they were watching cartoons in the girl’s bedroom.

“They were snatched away,” said Christian Cash. Gaston told the Gazette. “When I think he’s in his bedroom, he’s out.”

The distraught mother said her children had asked her to swim but the municipal pool had been closed due to a lack of lifeguard staff, she told the Gazette.
