The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of the Madhya Pradesh Police, investigating a complaint of disproportionate assets, recovered over Rs 85 lakh in cash from the Bhopal house of a state government clerk which was found to be toxic during a search on Wednesday. He said that during the search at the residence of upper division clerk Hero Keswani, who is currently drawing a monthly salary of around Rs 50,000, an EOW team also recovered documents related to several properties worth crores of rupees.

The search operation continued till late on Wednesday night and a note counting machine was brought in to calculate the exact value of the pile of cash found at his house in Beeragarh area, the official said. Superintendent of Police (EOW) Rajesh Mishra told PTI that an upper division clerk attached to the state’s medical education department claimed that he had consumed bathroom cleaner when the EOW team reached his house.

Keswani also tried to stop the officials from searching and pushing his house, saying, β€œHe was immediately rushed to the government Hamidiya Hospital, his condition is stable and he is being treated for blood pressure related problems. “Yes,” said the SP.

Mishra said cash worth over Rs 85 lakh was found at Keswani’s residence along with documents relating to immovable properties worth crores of rupees and other assets. He said that according to an estimate, he owns properties worth four crore rupees.

The EOW official said Keswani’s palatial residence, where expensive decorative items were found, was itself worth around Rs 1.5 crore. The SP said the clerk had started his job with a salary of around Rs 4,000 per month and was currently earning Rs 50,000 per month.

Lakhs of rupees were found deposited in the bank accounts of Keswani’s family. The official said he had bought most of the properties in the name of his wife, who is a housewife with no source of income. Mishra said that the total value of the assets unearthed during the search will be estimated only after the completion of the verification work and verification of the documents.
