At least 13 people were killed and 40 injured when a fire broke out at a night club in Thailand early Friday morning.

The fire broke out at around 1:00 a.m. (1800 GMT) at the Mountain Bay Nightspot in Satahup district of Chonburi province, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) south of Bangkok, an official from the Suang Rosnathamasathan Rescue Foundation told AFP. located in. Anonymity

Video footage posted by the rescue service shows desperate people running screaming from the club, their clothes on fire, as a huge fire rages in the background.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control after about three hours.

Concerns have long been raised about Thailand’s lax approach to health and safety, particularly in its countless bars and nightclubs.

In 2009, a massive volcano erupted during a New Year’s Eve party at Bangkok’s glamorous Santika Club, killing 67 people and injuring more than 200.

Santika’s owner was jailed for three years for the fire, which started when fireworks were set off while rock band Burn played on stage.

More recently, in 2012 four people died in a fire caused by an electrical fault at a club on the holiday island of Phuket, a magnet for foreign tourists.
